Ways to Use Your Self-Care Eye Pillows

Ways to Use Your Self-Care Eye Pillows

Besides aesthetics, I get extra satisfaction when I make something functional, and even better if they’re multi-use! So I was really happy when I launched my collection of eye pillows late last year. A lot of work went into prototyping and testing these babies - I wanted them to be the perfect weight, size, use the best filler and amount of lavender - and the end product is something that I’m really proud of. Not only do they showcase the beauty of plant dyes, they’re also an easy-to-use tool for some simple yet effective self-care. Amidst all the COVID-19 chaos, I thought I’d share with you how I enjoy using mine and hopefully give you some ideas on how to relax and tune out, even just for a while.

Cold/Hayfever Relief - When warmed and placed over the eyes, the pillows work wonders to relieve nasal congestion and sinus-induced headaches and is a lifesaver when I have a cold.

Soothe Strained Muscles - Placing a warmed pillow as a compress over areas of stiffness can help improve circulation and relax muscles which have become tensed as a result of working in a stagnated position for long periods of time (on the computer, sewing machine or just repetitive actions). I like placing it across the back of my neck or shoulders when sitting at the computer. They are also the perfect size to between your neck and pillow or in the small of your back when you’re lying down and the essential oils from the lavender can also improve relaxation.

Eye Mask/Meditation Tool - Simply placing one over your eyes will not only blocks out light, the light acupressure from the weight of the pillow can also help to slow down your heart rate, and combined with calming properties of lavender, can help to improve sleep quality. Now that you’re working from home, a 5-min break every few hours with your eye pillow on a reclining chair or sofa can help you refresh, helping you concentrate better. One thing about working from home is the inability to feel like you’re “no longer in the office” so at the end of the day, some deep breathing exercises with your eye closed can help tell your body it’s now time to get off work and relax.

Wrist Support - I’ve been having some wrist pains from using the mouse and repetitive stress from lifting heavy dye pots and tightening fabric bundles and I find that a warmed pillow placed under the wrist and folded over helps to calm it down. If you’re scrambling to set yourself up to work from home, it works great as a wrist support too, helping your wrists maintain a natural arch while using the mouse and keyboard.

Calm Migraines - Using a chilled eye pillow as a cold compress over eyes can help to cut out light stimuli and relieve migraines and tension headaches.

In-flight Pillow - I find my eye pillow really good for slipping under head rests to fill out the uncomfortable gap in the seats on flights. Plus, they’re flexible and mould to your posture, unlike inflatable pillows. It’s not the most applicable now with all the travel bans, but a great one to remember for when you finally get to fly again!

All my eye pillows have a 100% linen cover, which are available in 2 styles - Indigo Shibori or Botanical Print. The pillow inserts are made with 100% raw cotton and filled with Australian-grown organic flaxseeds and lavender. Linen and cotton both have high burning points, which ensures that the pillows can withstand heating when you want to use them warmed. The high oil content of flaxseeds help them hold heat for a prolonged period of time, releasing them slowly for soothing relaxation. Lavender not only smells amazing, but also helps to reduce anxiety and stress and promote sleep. A removable cover also makes them washable, while keeping the flaxseeds and lavender dry.

To Warm - Place on a ceramic or glass plate and heat for 15 seconds in the microwave with a mug of water. Flip the pillow and repeat, 15 seconds each time, up to a total of 60 seconds, till it’s the desired temperature. You can also heat it in a warm oven, in a covered Pyrex or ceramic dish for 10 - 15 minutes, checking regularly to avoid scorching. I’ve also tried ironing with a steam iron with good effect, although it is a more “active” method compared to the first two. Always test the temperature with your hands first, it should feel warm, not hot, and it will feel warmer on your face and eyes!

To Chill - Place in a freezer bag or container and freeze for 30 minutes before use.

To Refresh - The removable cover is washable and will maintain its vibrancy with some simple TLC. If you feel the lavender scent is fading, you can rub the pillow insert to break up the lavender and release more essential oils. You can also apply a drop or two of lavender essential oil onto the pillow insert and allowing it to air dry before putting the cover back on (direct contact between the raw essential oils and natural dyes on the cover can cause changes in colour).

While simply using an eye pillow won’t cure a cold or heal injured muscles, they are simple and accessible aids that can help relieve symptoms and provide some much needed relaxation. You can take a look at the full range here, and even though I can’t send scents through the internet, trust me when I say they have the most gorgeous smell, you won’t be disappointed!
